Beat the heat at home and away

As a premium private home care company, Acquaint educates our carers on many things, including how to help our clients avoid heat-related problems.

As a premium private home care company, Acquaint educates our carers on many things, including how to help our clients avoid heat-related problems. This is especially relevant for our clients who may have a chronic disease, are poorly hydrated, or are taking medications such as diuretics.

As it hots up outside, so does our body. Generally, our bodies readily adjust but with age, the process slows down and can result in dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Dehydration in older people can cause problems such as confusion, constipation, dizziness and weakness. Older people need to keep up their fluid intake as they may become dehydrated before they feel thirsty.

Symptoms of dehydration

Symptoms of dehydration can include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Heart palpitations
  • Muscle cramps
  • Constipation
  • Dark urine
  • Intense thirst

How to prevent dehydration

To prevent the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related problems, here are some steps that can be taken:

  • stay in a cool place out of the sun
  • wear loose clothing and remove unnecessary clothes
  • drink small amounts of cool water, often
  • avoid drinks that can further dehydrate you, such as caffeine and alcohol.
