Keeping our elders warm in winter

No goosebumps, no problem

As the Melbourne chill settles in and the fog rolls over High Street, warmth becomes more than a comfort – it’s a necessity.

And at Acquaint, we know fighting the chill requires more than tartan shawls and hot water bottles (charming though they are). That’s why we focus on safety, dignity and peace of mind.

So if your loved one prefers their fireside armchair to a nursing home, here are our top tips to keep them cosy and warm – and your conscience clear – this winter.

Tip #1: Layer up!

Our first of many winter health tips? The key to keeping warm in winter for the elderly is smart layering. Layering that’s soft, breathable, easy to move in – but still chic.

So pop a singlet beneath a fine cashmere, then top it all off with a robe. Because, why not?

Another option? Natural fibres like wool and merino regulate body temperature beautifully. Then, top it all off with a coat (ideally shearling-lined).

Bonus points if it has pockets for peppermints.

Tip #2: Heat the human, not the hallway

Rooms may be draughty, but your loved one’s circulation is the true priority. Naturally.

So use electric throws, heated wheat packs and good-quality hot water bottles to focus the warmth directly on the body.

And remember: despite common misconceptions, bedrooms should never feel like meat lockers. A discreet oil heater or split system can keep things cosy without blowing the budget.

Tip #3: Dress the bed (to the nines)

Cold nights are the most dangerous for seniors. Low body temperatures during sleep can increase the risk of illness.

The lifesavers? Electric blankets (with timers!) and flannelette sheets. They can transform a chilly chamber into a snug sanctuary.

And never underestimate the power of the humble bed sock – one simply cannot unwind with cold feet.

Tip #4: Keep the house draught-free

Window seals, door snakes and heavy curtains are the unsung heroes of winter wellness. But no longer. We’re putting them directly in the spotlight.

Because the importance of keeping warm air in and cold air out cannot be overstated.

So, whether you reside in a gloriously draughty Victorian manor or simply a breezy Brighton bungalow, make sure your loved one isn’t living in a wind tunnel.

Tip #5: Eat nutritious and delicious meals

A warm body starts from within.

Hot soups, stews and frequent cups of tea are more than comforting; they keep energy levels up and help maintain core warmth.

Don’t shy away from good fats – this is not the season for restraint.

Your loved one needs fuel this winter. Not lettuce.

Tip #6: Keep moving (even if it’s just to the kettle)

Staying warm isn’t just about what you wear. It’s also about keeping that circulation in motion.

Gentle movement throughout the day, even a few laps from armchair to kitchen, helps regulate body temperature and keeps joints from stiffening.

Encourage simple tasks: watering the plants, folding laundry or making a cup of tea (preferably for two). Just enough activity to warm the limbs – and build anticipation for the next biscuit.
